How do you cook in a Sun Oven ?
Its literally as simple as cooking in any other oven! You do need a nice clear sunny day to make the oven work, but other than that – its simple! You just set out your oven, open the reflectors and face the oven so it gets the most direct sunlight. If you want to cook faster you can continually move the oven to face the sun, but I just left it sitting in one spot and our meal cooked in 2 hours. To be fair it was probably done sooner, but I got caught up doing other things. The same meal takes about 1 hour to cook in a conventional oven on 350 degrees.
The oven temperature did vary throughout the two hours from 250 – 350 degrees. Its really that simple. A great tool to use to reduce your energy costs and consumption and not heat up your house in the summer months! Also, this would be great to take camping as well.

I used my same recipe from the $5 challenge which you can find here .
The recipe is so simple and a family favorite!
How do you make Dirt Dessert for Earth Day?
This is a childhood favorite of mine ! I remember going to church activities and someone would bring dirt dessert and it was such a treat!
Its so simple –
- crushed cookies
- gummy worms
I used my favorite from scratch pudding recipe from Jill Winger which you can find here. It might sound strange to use butterscotch but I REALLY love this recipe and our dirt out here in the desert it more tan/brown than black anyway! The crushed cookies is more of our potting soil color! You could use a box of pudding for sure. This recipe is a favorite, because I am able to use up duck eggs and fresh goat milk from our farm. I am telling your from scratch pudding is such a treat- try it I bet you wont go back to the boxed stuff!
I crushed the cookies in my Ninja blender. You could probably use any blender or even crush them by hand. Lastly I topped them off with gummy worms. I couldnt find organic but I did the best I could here.
The kids (and hubby) loved it !

How Do You Make a Simple Bird Feeder For Earth Day?
- Toilet paper roll
- peanut butter
One simple way to make a bird feeder is to repurposed empty toilet paper rolls, spread peanut butter on them and then roll them in seeds. We used some string to hang them from the trees. Even my 2 year old was able to make one! This is a messy one so we did the project outside. The kids all loved the project!
Here is a quality wild bird seed you can purchase.
What is Imperfect?
Talk about a simple Earth Day Activity – Order your produce for the week! Imperfect is a company that helps reduce food waste! Don’t worry they wont send you a box of Egg Plant or Green Peppers (ok maybe I am the only one who doesn’t like those items…) You are in full control of your order and you can skip or cancel any time. We have gotten a couple boxes and really enjoyed the food and the cost savings!

Do People still Trade in 2021?
Okay so maybe trading isnt exactly an Earth Day activity, but two small family farms trading milk and eggs to be more sustainable is still fun to mention! We trade all the time on our farm and it truly is a lost form of commerce. We traded 3 gallons of fresh goat milk for two dozen duck hatching eggs. Ancona Ducks are not something we currently raise on our farm, but we desire to add them because they are another quality dual purpose bird. The eggs have been carefully placed in our incubator and we should have some ducklings in about a month!
I hope this post was helpful and inspired you in some way to celebrate Earth Day !
